Helene weakened to a tropical storm Friday as it barreled across Georgia, pummeling the Southeast with flooding rain, strong winds and storm surge.

Additional rainfall is expected as large areas of Western North Carolina remain underwater from Helene, which made landfall in Florida on Thursday.

The storm weakened to a tropical storm early Friday morning, and weakened again into a tropical depression Friday afternoon as it barreled through Georgia, producing "historic and catastrophic flooding" over portions of the Southeast and southern Appalachians.

Helene, now a post-tropical cyclone, continues to flood parts of North Carolina and the Tennessee Valley. Dozens of storm-related deaths were reported in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
