iFixit Teardown Reveals It’s So Easy to Take the Back Off of the iPhone 16
The adhesive around the new iPhone has an aluminum lining underneath the rail, which allows electricity to pulse through and soften the glue as it warms it up. This is cleaner to work with than the usual adhesive strips and is also resealable. It’s specifically available on the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus.

But there’s a trade-off. In a subtle but notable omission, iFixit pointed out that the iPhone 16 lacks a millimeter-wave antenna, sacrificed to make space for the new Camera Control button. But the battery is the real star of the show. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus use a new electrically-releasing battery adhesive that improves the ease and safety of battery replacements. Simply apply a 9-volt charge to the battery, and it can be removed within a few seconds. (Unfortunately, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max do not use Apple's new adhesive.)

iPhone 16 Scores Higher on Repairability Than iPhone 15
In light of these three key design changes, iFixit granted the iPhone 16 lineup a repairability score of seven out of 10. By comparison, the iPhone 15 series received a score of four out of 10. This puts the iPhone 16 on par with the iPhone 14, which also got a seven out of 10 repairability score.
